Supplier Diversity
Schnucks has been serving customers for more than 80 years, growing from a single, small confectionery to a leading regional supermarket chain. We still follow the same values we have since 1939: Friendliness, Service, Quality, Variety, Value, Integrity, and Innovation. We started small, and we want to support small, diverse and local suppliers.
We launched a formal Supplier Diversity program in November 2020 in our efforts to better reflect the communities we serve, to promote opportunity and innovation, and to stimulate local economies.
"By aligning with diverse suppliers, we are strengthening both our business and our communities," said Todd Schnuck, Chairman and CEO. "We believe that this investment not only supports our diversity, equity and inclusion strategy, but it also enhances product offerings for our customers and bolsters our ability to do business in an ever-changing environment."
At Schnucks, we believe in nourishing people’s lives. We are committed to making a difference in the communities we serve, and to improving the lives of our teammates and customers. Through our Midwest family values, we celebrate diversity.

King’s Hawaiian was founded in Hilo, Hawaii in the 1950s by Robert R. Taira, who was the son of Japanese immigrants. If you’ve tried any King’s Hawaiian products before, you know there’s a distinctly sweet taste that makes their items unique. The story goes that in Robert’s first bake shop, customers rarely made it home without eating the bread! Robert continued his growth in the Aloha state, and in 1977, his success led to the creation of a 24,000-square-foot bakery in Torrance, California, which today, remains the home of King’s Hawaiian’s domestic operations. From there, Robert continued to innovate by adding more products with his signature island taste, many of which we carry in our stores.
Certifications & Organizations
Schnucks strongly encourages all diverse vendors to get 3rd party diverse owned certification. As many companies are starting supplier diversity programs, 3rd party certification provides proof that a company meets the requirements for classification as a diverse owned business, and is helpful in getting visibility for the company. Diverse certifications can be issued at the federal, state, or local level. The national organizations below also issue diversity certification. If your diverse business is not 3rd party certified, please reach out to one of the organizations listed below, or research diversity certification at the state level.
