Celebrate Mardi Gras With Sweet Treats From Schnucks
King Cakes and Paczki available at Schnucks through Tuesday, March 1
ST. LOUIS, Feb. 21, 2022 – Once again this year, Schnucks is proud to offer the official King Cake of the Soulard Mardi Gras. Through Fat Tuesday, March 1, cherry-filled King Cakes can be found in all Schnucks stores for $17.99.
The King Cake is a sweet coffee cake with a long and storied history. Symbolizing the gifts the Wise Men presented to the baby Jesus, this indulgence originated in Medieval Europe and was introduced to the new world by French settlers in Louisiana. The cake traditionally contains a small baby figurine baked inside.
“At Schnucks, the baby and Mardi Gras beads are placed in a plastic bag so customers can ‘hide’ the baby and decorate the cake themselves,” said Janell Schleeper, Schnucks Bakery Category Manager. “According to tradition, the person finding the baby is dubbed ‘King’ and is responsible for buying the next year’s cake or throwing next year’s Mardi Gras party.”

Another favorite Mardi Gras confection found at Schnucks Bakery is Paczki (pronounced “poonch-key”). Paczki is a rich, jelly-filled pastry traditionally served on Fat Tuesday as a pre-Lenten treat. It’s a time-tested Old World recipe, which originated long ago in Poland and features a delightfully sweet fruit filling inside a delicious dough shell. A four-count package is available at Schnucks for $4.49 through Fat Tuesday with a variety of fillings including raspberry, custard and lemon.
