Produce Rx

What is the Produce Rx program?

  • Schnucks, in collaboration with the American Heart Association, developed this program to provide nutrition assistance to people in the St. Louis area who are food insecure and have chronic illnesses like diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol.
  • For a period of 4 months starting on March 1st and ending on June 20th a group of pre-identified customers will receive a digital coupon for $20 to use in the produce department. This coupon is to be used only on fresh produce, but not limited to the types or quantities as long as it amounts to $20 or less.

How does it work?

  • The American Heart Association partnered with health clinics across the St. Louis area to identify food insecure individuals with a chronic illness (diabetes, high cholesterol or hypertension) and enrolled them in the Produce Rx. program with Schnucks. Part of this enrollment was signing each patient up with a Schnucks Rewards account.
  • American Heart shared the list of Schnucks Rewards phone numbers and emails of the 300 patients enrolled in the program in January of 2023. This cohort will receive the digital produce coupons through emails for a total of 8 times over a period of 16 weeks.
  • Each email will go out on Wednesday starting on March 1st, with the last email going out on June 7th. In the email will be a $20 digital coupon for fresh produce. The coupon will be valid for two weeks from the day they received the email.

Can a Schnucks teammate sign up a customer for the program?

No, a Schnucks teammate cannot sign up a customer for the Produce Rx program. If it is before 2/15 the customer can go back to their health clinic and request to sign up. If it is after 2/15, it is too late for the customer to enroll in the program.

Are these coupons different from other coupons?

  • Produce Rx coupons work just like any other coupon and must be “clipped” before checking out. Produce Rx coupons can be clipped by clicking on the coupon in their email.
  • Once the coupon is clipped, it will be applied to the next shopping trip that the customer buys any amount of fresh produce. It is important to note that even if the customer buys $1 worth of produce the entire $20 coupon will be applied and no longer be valid to use.
  • These coupons cannot be split and customers should be instructed to only clip the coupon when they know they will be purchasing $20 or more. If the customer spends more than $20 on fresh produce, the coupon will deduct $20 from the total and the customer will have to pay for the rest.
  • If a customer mistakenly spends their coupon before they are ready to spend the entire $20, we will either reload the coupon into the customers account or add rewards dollars into their account to use, but ONLY for the first week as customers learn how the program works. IF you have questions about this, please contact Allison Primo asprimo@schnucks.com or Olivia Bleitz obleitz@schnucks.com.

How do participants redeem their coupons at checkout?

  • Like other Schnucks coupons, participants must put their phone number into the card reader during checkout and their clipped coupon/s will be applied to their bill automatically.
  • Customers will have to clip the coupon before they can apply it to their order at checkout.

Where can participants redeem their coupons?

Participants can redeem their coupons at ANY Schnucks location.
