The Quarles Family

Illinois

Jaliyah and Xavier Quarles are first-time scholarship recipients for the 2020-21 school year and attend a private school in the Winthrop, Illinois area. Jaliyah is a 7th grader who enjoys running track, cross country and playing basketball. She is described as resilient, for being able to adapt after all the family moves during her parents’ military service. Xavier is in 4th grade and likes to read. He can tell you anything you want to know about sharks! Both love their school, their teachers, and the excellent education they are receiving.

Army Staff Sergeant Carmen N. Marin-Quarles joined the military at the age of 18 and served just over 10 years. She worked as a Signal Support Systems Specialist, lead and supervised many soldiers, met and married her husband (who also served), had three children, and deployed on two tours of duty in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom with the 51st Signal Battalion. It was during her second tour in Iraq that she was injured and in 2016 was medically retired. While recovering from her injuries at Fort Carson, Colorado, SSG Marin-Quarles became a squad leader and helped other wounded service members and their family’s transition into civilian life. She earned numerous awards and decorations during her military career, is currently attending graduate school for Social Work with a military concentration and will graduate with a master’s degree in May 2021.
