The Anderson Family

Illinois

Skyler and Alex Anderson are from the Gifford, Illinois area and attend private school. Skyler is in 9th grade and thrives in her private school environment. She is described as outgoing, smart and hard-working. Volunteering, cross country track and cheerleading are activities that Skyler truly enjoys. Alex is a 6th grader who hopes to one day be a doctor or veterinarian. She loves her school, which she’s attended since Kindergarten, as well as running and dancing. She has raised barn cats from the time they were tiny kittens and enjoys time spent with friends.

Army Sergeant Garrett T. Anderson served in active duty from 1998 to 2002 and then with the Illinois National Guard as a sniper in a reconnaissance unit. In May 2005, SGT Anderson’s unit was deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Six months in, he was seriously injured when a roadside bomb was detonated under the Humvee he was driving. As a result, SGT Anderson lost his right arm above the elbow. For 12 years, after his recovery and rehabilitation, SGT Anderson was a stay-at-home dad. Along with being a room parent for his daughters, he attended field trips and coached many of the sports the girls participated in. During this time, he also completed his undergraduate degree and a master’s degree. SGT Anderson currently works at the Chez Center for Veterans at the University of Illinois where he oversees student recruitment.
